2022 Idée Fixe, Premier Brut, Blanc de Blancs – Margaret River
I have been stalking this wine since its inaugural 2020 release, and it’s fair to say that the vision and bravery taken to introduce a sparkling programme to the Vasse Felix family of wines has paid off handsomely. Like the previous two vintages, which both made the cut for 100 Best, this wow is a thriller. Instead of centring its attraction on its firm mineral foundations, like so many wickedly enticing BdeBs, it flips the model, encouraging the sensual core of fruit to reach out in one direction towards its delicate, come-hither white flower perfume and in the other to the anchor of acidity, which keeps it tethered to its chilly Karridale origins. This results in a wine of superb persistence enhanced with brief moments of luxury. This 2022 is a stunner, and it is much fresher and more complete than any French versions I have found this year under £50.
